The Latino Arts Strings Program and Violins of Hope were both recipients of Herzfeld Foundation competitive arts and culture grants in 2025
Building on the popularity of our competitive grants process for arts and culture organizations that we initiated last year, the Herzfeld Foundation is excited to announce the launch of similar grant opportunities for 2026. Last year’s solicitation attracted 68 applicants, and we awarded grants to just over half (37, or 54%). We hope to see similar numbers this year.
The specific grants categories for 2026 are the same as last year and include:
  • General operating grants to support small arts and culture organizations with annual budgets under $750,000.
  • Grants to organizations with budgets of any size to support new arts and culture projects and programs in Milwaukee.
  • Grants to support capacity-building, collaborative projects, and new educational strategies for arts education organizations in Milwaukee.
  • Arts awareness grants to media organizations to support their efforts to enhance their journalistic coverage of the arts in Milwaukee.
For those interested in applying, we want to clarify a couple of points that caused some confusion last year.

The first is that while we are using the same grant application for our small arts and culture and new project categories, eligibility is different for the two. We define small organizations as those with annual budgets of $750,000 or less, and only organizations that meet that criterion can apply for general operations support under this category. Conversely, organizations with budgets of any size can apply for support of a new project or program – the main criterion here is that the project or program really is new, which means our funds essentially would support its launch.

Another point of clarification is that our arts education grants – while intended to support organizations that have mission-driven commitments to arts education – will not be awarded to support general operations. Instead, these grants will support specific projects or programs or new efforts by arts education organizations to expand their offerings or enhance their business models and sustainability.

The grant applications for each category contain more details on eligibility, minimum and maximum grant amounts, and other specifics, and can be accessed by clicking on the prompt below. Applications are due by April 10, and please feel free to contact us with any comments or questions.

We use our blog to inform our partners and interested parties about new developments at the Herzfeld Foundation and to share our thoughts and insights on successful programs we have supported and new grantmaking areas we plan to pursue.
